Quality Note:
Evaluation and Management Coding Primary Care was created for this for the PCP training at our Community Mental Health Center, but it could be modified for coder training as well. I would create 2 hardcopy coding exercises, one for new patient and one for established patient. I would stay within tight parameters, just going thru ‘leveling’ each encounter with a brief discussion of Time coding at the end with a brief Q/A session. I will stick to using the 1997 General Multi-system exam included, although in the real world they could also use the 1995 exam guidelines, or 1997 single organ-system exam (if applicable)-whichever is advantageous to provider
