NANSLO Remote Lab Activity: Beer-Lambert Law

This NANSLO lab activity is self-contained and can be used in first year general chemistry with lab and survey of chemistry courses. In this activity, known concentrations of nickel sulfate are used to create a standard curve and to determine the concentration of an unknown sample. The lab activity includes background information on the electromagnetic spectrum, the method for calculating the energy of a photon of electromagnetic radiation and the relationship between wavelength and frequency of electromagnetic radiation, and information on how the absorbance of a solution is related to the concentration of the absorbing species in a solution known as the Beer-Lambert law . The lab activity includes pre-lab questions, lab exercises, and data collection and analysis activities.
