ARISE Scenario Faculty Information/Instructions

The files in this collection should be reviewed first in order to familiarize yourself with the technology and overall design of the augmented reality scenarios. In 2014, the Advancing Careers and Training for Healthcare (ACT for Healthcare) was formed as part of a three year Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant from the Department of Labor. The ACT for Healthcare group is a collaboration of 16 Wisconsin technical colleges, industry partners, workforce development systems, and previous TAACCCT grant recipients focused on enhancing healthcare training programs. One portion of the grant is the development of Augmented Reality Integrated Simulation Education (ARISE) utilizing the ARIS application. The ARISE project merges the concepts of simulation with augmented reality and game-based situated learning theory within 150 scenarios for healthcare students. The finished scenarios will be open source through the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) database in fall 2017.

Adobe PDF Simulations have been designed for use in low or high resource simulation settings, focused on providing maximum flexibility for student centered learning. Media augments reality with rich video, pictures, and sounds. Each simulation starts with a video of a live nurse report as would occur during shift-to-shift report, followed by a video introduction to a live simulated patient. This encourages the student to continually focus on safe, patient-centered care during simulation, as advocated by QSEN (2014). (67 KB)
Adobe PDF The Therapeutic Communication Serious Games storyline is a collection of serious games that uses rich video media to provide students the opportunity to practice communicating therapeutically with “patients” in a low-risk manner prior to more high-risk settings. In addition, whether preparing for class, simulation and/or clinical experiences, students are provided with immediate feedback to further enhance learning. (47 KB)
Adobe PDF Clinical case studies are a collection of patient storylines that use rich video media and simulated patient chart content to bring case studies to life. Simulated patient videos encourage a continual student focus on safe, patient-centered care, as advocated by QSEN (2014). In this teaching strategy, students are given the opportunity to apply their nursing knowledge and develop their clinical reasoning skills in a low-risk manner prior to caring for actual patients in high-risk settings.
