Foreign Language Credential Program

This collection includes materials for CUNY Kingsborough Community College’s Foreign Language Credential Program. It includes the program syllabus, curriculum, and course portfolio. The Foreign Language Credential (FLC) program is designed to assist students with the development of skills necessary to better assist their patients, while making the student more marketable in the workplace. This is accomplished through this course by enhancing knowledge and awareness of the impact culture plays in health care; providing an introduction to basic interpreting skills; increasing student’s healthcare vocabulary in English and their native language; and providing techniques and tips for comfortably interpreting within their level of skill. The goal of the Foreign Language Credential (FLC) Training Curriculum is to train incumbent and aspiring healthcare workers at all levels to: adopt a culturally competent approach to both the interpretation services and care that they provide to patients and proficiently use healthcare terminology in both English (which they generally learn and master through their coursework and on-the-job training) and their native language. Upon completion of this program, students will be able to: define cultural competency and explain its importance in a healthcare setting; describe culturally competent practices in healthcare; recognize the role, responsibilities, and challenges a healthcare professional faces by interpreting information for a patient in a healthcare setting; discuss chronic and emerging health issues across cultures in the United States and methods for prevention; and better support patients in need of interpretation assistance in common medical encounters and emergency situations. This collection provides a (1) program syllabus, which outlining learning objectives and schedule, (2) the curriculum outlining each module, learning objectives and vocabulary, and recommended relevant activities; and (3) a program course portfolio that includes relevant hyperlinks and resources by module.
