CPS 161 Syllabus
Instructor: Clem Hasselbach
Requirements for the course:
Credits: 4 hours
Prerequisites: Computer literacy and Math 169. CPS161 is quite challenging. WCC has a more basic first programming course(cps120) which is available for students who want/need an easier first class in programming.
REQUIRED TEXT
We will be using the textbook: Absolute Java by Savitch
any edition will do: common editions currently used are 3,4,5 - buying the older versions should be cheaper (check out amazon.com).
CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the Java programming language. The focus will be on problem solving strategies, algorithm development and verification with test data, programming style, and documentation techniques in simple programmming examples. The content of this course includes: object oriented concepts, string manipulation, I/O (input/output), GUI(graphical user interface) concepts, and event handling.
Course Objectives
The following list does not necessarily represent the order in which material will be covered in the course.
- Programming Fundamentals
- Use variables, primitive types, expressions, and data conversions. Use string class, character strings, concatenation, and escape sequences.
- Use random class in Math package, use classes to format numbers for output.
- Write programs using conditionals, and loop control structure.
- Write comparisons of certain data types and Boolean expressions.
- Classes: Object Oriented Programming
- Define and use classes by creating instance variables and using class methods.
- Write static, and overloded methods and constructors. Develop user interface by writing static class members and methods.
- Declare and use one and two-dimensional arrays of primitives and objects.
