Helpful Hints Lesson 4
- When performing operations on fractions it is helpful to start by asking yourself what the operation is, then apply the rule for that operation. Example: Many students attempt to multiply fractions by finding the LCD, but the LCD is used when adding, not when multiplying.
- When solving equations that contain fractions, finding the LCD for all fractions and multiplying both sides by the LCD (to clear the fractions) is the most useful method. As the fractions become more complicated this method simplifies the equation quickly.
- A complex fraction is just another way to represent division, it's just the numerator and/or the denominator is a fraction.
- Remember−a b =−a b =a −b
. Make sure you understand this rule.
- When doing math problems always reduce all fractions. Reduced, lowest terms and simplified all have the same meaning.
