Review:
For Unit 2 you should know the following:
- A complete understanding of the vocabulary; integers, absolute value and opposites.
- How to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers.
- How to use exponents with integers.
- How to apply the order of operations on algebraic expressions.
Helpful Hints:
- There are more grades sacrificed and degrees abandoned because of two math topics: 1. How to operate on fractions (which is coming up) and 2. How to operate on integers. You must know what to do when you are adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing integers. I suggest you memorize the rules forever!
- Our 4th grade understanding of subtraction is only useful when subtracting a smaller positive number from a larger positive number. For any other subtraction think: add the opposite or in math symbols: a - b = a + (-b).
- The difference between (-2)2 and -22 is the first algebraic expression means to square a negative two or-2 *-2, which is a positive 4. The second expression means to square what is directly to the left of the exponent, the two, and then take the opposite or - (2 * 2) which is a negative
