The postpartum period is the time between the birth of the infant and the restoration of a woman’s reproductive organs to their pre-pregnancy state. This module will provide the nursing student with the knowledge needed to meet they physiological, psychological, and sociocultural needs of newly delivered mothers.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe anatomic and physiologic changes that occur in the postpartum period
- Discuss postpartum care and discharge teaching
- Identify nursing interventions to prevent postpartum complications and promote health in the postpartum client.
- Identify maternal and infant behaviors and conditions that facilitate and inhibit healthy attachment
- Describe adjustment of the sibling and grandparent
- Identify causes, signs, and management of possible postpartum complications
- Differentiate and discuss symptoms and management of postpartum mood disorders
- Identify nursing interventions associated with perinatal grief and loss
