Today’s woman experiences a variety of health issues that impact her throughout her life. This module focuses on a variety of women’s health issues that nurses face daily including reproduction, abortion, sexually transmitted infections, cancers, and menopausal concerns.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Discuss contemporary issues and trends in women’s health and maternity nursing including legal and ethical issues
- Relate the impact of culture on childbearing families
- Explain the cycle of violence and it’s use in assessment and intervention for battered women
- Describe purpose of and components of taking a woman’s history and performing/assiting with a physical examination
- Review patient teaching of breast self-examinations
- Differentiate signs, symptoms, and management of menstrual and age-related disorders
- Describe prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections in women
- Describe the management of vaginal infections
- Discuss the pathophysiology, medical management, and emotional effects of cancerous conditions in women
- Describe common diagnoses and treatments for infertility
- Discuss various methods of contraception including advantages, disadvantages, and nursing considerations for recommendations
- Describe the techniques used for medical and surgical interruption of pregnancy
