Introduction
This module covers local and topical anesthetics. This module includes all aspects of anesthetics including the drug similarities and differences. Attention is given to the mechanism of action of the local anesthetic.
The medical implications of local anesthesia is also presented. Students who do not have a background in pharmacology may need supplemental materials to enhance understanding.
Objectives
Upon completion of this module, the student will be able to:
- Describe the properties of an ideal anesthetic.
- Describe the mode of action of local anesthetics.
- List the local anesthetics used in dentistry and describe
- Describe the advantages of using a local anesthetic with a vasoconstrictor.
- Describe the mode of action, contraindications and side effects of local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor drugs.
- List and describe the medical considerations in choosing a local anesthetic.
- Describe the agents, indications for use and method of application of topical anesthetics.
- Calculate the maximum dosage, of a specific anesthetic, for a patient.
