Making a Difference in Students' Lives Through Use of Open Education Resources MP4 Video Consortium for Healthcare Education Online Faculty Professional Development Webinar April 2, 2015

BCcampus is a publicly funded organization that uses information technology to connect the expertise, programs, and resources of all British Columbia post-secondary institutions under a collaborative service delivery framework. As part of the CHEO initiative funded by a U.S. Department of Labor TAACCCT grant, BCcampus was asked to review and identify several textbooks that could be used for pre-requisite science courses taught in the allied health field. BCcampus engaged several CHEO instructors in reviewing these texts. All were highly rated by these instructors and those it works with in British Columbia. Mary Burgess shares information on the process used to review these textbooks. Kate Lormand, one of those reviewers, discusses her role in reviewing and providing feedback on a science textbook. In September 2012, Tacoma Community College started a campaign called “Liberate $250K.” The goal of the OER Project was to increase access to education by lowering textbook costs while providing a quality learning experience. It was estimated that by April 2013, students saved a collective $266,000 in textbook costs (1,200 students enrolled in OER courses). Pattie Green was one of the faculty participating in that initiative and discusses her use of open educaitonal resources. These presenters cover: Openly Licensed CHEO Science Textbooks: Learn which books were selected, the rubric that was used to review them, and how you can access them for use in your courses – Mary Burgess OER Textbook Review Process: Learn the process used by one of the reviewers, a CHEO Curriculum Leads, to provide feedback and suggestions on one of the CHEO science books – Kate Lormand A Faculty View of OER: Learn how Pattie S. Green, Biology faculty at Tacoma Community College, incorporated OER content into biology classes including the thought process and steps to delivering that content. She also discusses both pros and cons of using OER and developing one’s own OER content - Pattie Green CHEO textbooks reviewed for this initiative: Anatomy and Physiology – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=f4873e49-e09c-469e-9ee8-9f14ca5a4e00&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Biology Chemistry (adapted version) – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c7025f6b-f32b-4d0a-865e-f473d9f98fb6&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Chemistry Chemistry (original version) – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=2b7740b5-88cb-4e78-8f93-9f582afa605a&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Chemistry College Physics – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=c0cd5405-a301-4940-ab3a-56f754a0030a&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Physics Biology – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=561e303a-5a74-4bfe-af71-e884daece4e5&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Biology In addition, BCcampus suggested several others that might be useful in allied health: Concepts of Biology – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=43cb399c-8324-4a19-867e-94f6fcbfb126&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Biology Pharmacology – http://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/?uuid=81f9ddbb-b946-400e-ac10-9afd71c47e32&contributor=&keyword=&subject=Pharmacy%2FPharmacology+Related To view links to other openly licensed textbooks posted through BCcampus, go to BCcampus open resources website – http://open.bccampus.ca/. Mary Burgess, Kate Lormand, and Pattie Green delivered this professional development webinar on April 2, 2015 to Consortium for Healthcare Education Online (CHEO) faculty. About the Presenters: Mary Burgess is acting executive director, BCcampus. Prior to joining BCcampus in 2012, Burgess was the director of the Centre for Teaching and Education Technologies at Royal Roads University where she started the University’s first open educational resources project. She is a career instructional designer and longtime advocate of OER. Kate Lormand is the CHEO curriculum lead, allied health/biology, and an adjunct faculty for CCConline and Great Falls College Montana State University. She has over 20 years of experience teaching at the community college level in biology, anatomy and physiology, genetics, and botany for both majors and non-majors. Her experience includes both traditional face-to-face and online teaching. Additionally, Lormand worked on the development of an online biology course through the Monterey Institute, writing an online text and creating the activities and learning objectives for these chapters. Pattie Green is a biology faculty at Tacoma Community College teaching anatomy and physiology and microbiology. She has developed both the pre-nursing A&P and microbiology course curriculum in hybrid-online forms.
