Introductory Algebra Self-Paced - GCC

Why was MAT 095S developed? This course was developed as a part of a self-paced model for students wishing to move through developmental math at their own pace. In many cases, students who place into Math 090 instantly have a year of developmental math courses before being allowed to move on for college credit math courses. This can be frustrating for students, especially those who need a brief reminder of the material. Many students don’t realize that they should study for the placement test, and end up in a class that may set them back a year. Math 090S was developed first to give students who wish to move quickly through these math courses an option to do so. Once the student completes the Math 090S course, they can move to Math 095S. Students can complete Math 090S and Math 095S in one semester, or less, and move on to college credit mathematics. Course Structure: Math 095S is completely developed at this point and it will run for the first time in the fall of 2014. The course has the same content as Math 095, but it is divided into six modules. The format of the course is the same as Math 090S. A new grading system is being used for this course: A, B, C and NC (rather than A, B, C, and F). The NC grade is for students that have been working on the modules but have not completed the course by the end of the semester. Students receive a letter grade for the course once all six modules and the final exam are successfully completed. Each module is made of up four to six sections of content mapping to the course textbook. For each section, there are typed guided notes that the students can print if they would like. Each section has a video lecture that corresponds to the guided notes. The guided notes consist of brief introduction and several examples that are worked during the video. The students will work through the video and notes, at the own pace, and then they will move to the homework set for each section. The homework sets are completed in My Math Lab, and they are broken up by module and section. Once a student completes all of the module homework, they will take a practice. This will tell them if they are prepared or not for the real module test. At this point, they have an option to work more problems created by My Math Lab based on the practice exam, or they can move to the real module exam. The student will take the exams in My Math Lab during class time. Each exam is password protected by the instructor, so the students will not be able to access it until they are ready to take it. This also allows for each student to have different examples of the same mathematical content
