HUM 299 Environmental Humanities

In this course, students draw on philosophy, history and fiction alongside science, engineering and technology to explore human relationships with our natural environments. We will use reasoning, dialogue, cross-cultural comparisons, historical cases and personal experience to study problems and solutions to crucial environmental issues. These include global climate change, energy consumption, renewable resources, sustainability, land use and restoration, pollution and public health, modern agriculture, and green jobs. The course is an online, open-access course, with emphasis on applying humanities to innovations in green technology. The course includes weekly readings, class discussions, and directed writing, with opportunities to make connections to students’ professional interests in technology and engineering. General course description This course will address the in-depth study of special topics in humanities which do not have specific courses in the catalogue. Course content and requirements will vary depending on the topic being studied. Please note that all course materials and content are provided in the IMS Common Cartridge (IMSCC) format. The content can be accessed by opening the IMSCC file using your organization's Learning Management System application (these include Blackboard, D2L, Canvas etc.). Additional information about accessing Common Cartridge files can be found on the IMS Global Web site: http://www.imsglobal.org/cc. Future plans for the Skills Commons Web site include a feature that will allow users to view and download course content that is provided in the IMSCC format.
