CalPoly Promoting Diversity, Inclusion and Equity in the Local Community Through Collaboration on Interactive Virtual Reality (VR) Training Tools

Through this project we aim to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the local community by incorporating immersive (virtual reality) VR components into existing sexual and gender harassment, and transgender awareness training. With local partners SAFER and GALA Pride and Diversity Center, researchers and assistants sought to assess training methods, future needs, and potential for integration of virtual reality into training. We wanted to create undergraduate research opportunities for students while improving DEI in the community by creating novel approaches sexual and gender harassment, and transgender awareness training. This grant project was designed to be the initial stage of a larger project to develop VR simulations. In this stage we sought to train research assistants; understand training needs clearly through community partners; identify methods for collecting user action and response data through unique branching tree narrative structures and interactions with users. Complete 2 effective screenplays improving training methods through novel methods.
