CUNY Curricula Design in Public Interest Tech Using OER

Public Interest Technology (PIT) has been defined as technology for the public good. As an emerging discipline, PIT has yet to be codified as a course of study at most University campuses. Because of this, there is a lack of curriculum materials that are available for adoption into university majors, general education tracks, interdisciplinary minors, etc. This proposal leverages the City University of New York’s (CUNY) expertise in the creation of Open Educational Resources (OER) to create a body of curricula in PIT. Through mini-grants, faculty will be engaged and encouraged to create PIT materials for use in current or new CUNY courses. They will also share these materials under a Creative Commons license. Curriculum shared as OER can be modified and shared back to the academic community. This allows for the updates to be crowd-sourced, allowing materials to stay current as the PIT discipline matures. OER are shared via various repositories such as oercommons.org which is open to all. Materials offered as OER will be usable not only by PIT-UN institutions but will be globally available.
