GWU-Ethical Tech Initiative of DC

The objective of the Ethical Tech Initiative of DC (ETI) is to increase understanding of how to address a series of current problems involving digital technology, and in some instances, to take action addressing those problems. The problems that the ETI was particularly concerned about included mis- and dis-information on social media; bias in predictive algorithms; data privacy in the areas of reproduction, education, and dating apps; carceral surveillance; and deepfakes. We also focused on how to use technology to serve underserved populations and to engage those populations to ensure that we provide those services in a manner that is appropriate and effective. That included efforts addressing the effect of COVID misinformation on communities of color; the role of technology in enhancing access to justice for poor, minority, and marginalized communities; and the provision of legal and paralegal education to incarcerated persons. While working in these areas, we have also pursued the objectives of (1) ensuring that students are involved in our activities at all levels so as to nurture interest and experience in public interest technology in the next generation; (2) engaging in interdisciplinary research and dialogue; and (3) providing resources that will be available to other PIT-UN members and to the public.
