CWRU Socio-Technology of Cyber Security An Experiential-Learning Course

Developed a “Socio-Technology of Cyber Security: An Experiential Learning" course. The project set four objectives. Its chief objective was the establishment and teaching of an experiential-learning course on cybersecurity. A second objective was to identify Provost Scholars who have an interest in cybersecurity questions. As noted, cybersecurity necessitates contributions from the best minds of students from virtually all areas of study. A third objective was to establish apprenticeships and internships, including with government, for-profit businesses, and non-profit organizations. The State Department and other federal organizations offer internships that can lead to federal employment opportunities. The State Department and other federal organizations are taking significant steps to diversify their work forces through reaching out to students and universities from which they have not significantly recruited in the past. Apprenticeships and internships arising from this course will respond to these recruitment efforts. In addition, this project will work with NEOCC to establish internships with nonprofit and for-profit organizations. NEOCC is a cross-sector industry consortium supporting information security teams of many of NEOH’s largest companies and organizations through the sharing of cybersecurity best practices and threat information. NEOCC has a strong interest in strengthening the region's talent development pipeline in all professional areas and will support the proposal by making available in multiple ways the expertise of its members. A fourth objective was to establish collaborations across the academy with practitioners in government, business, and nonprofits. These collaborations can provide insights into all parts of the course, especially the experiential learning component. The students will learn the necessary skills that are required for cybersecurity jobs. The course will also cultivate a common belief that technologies should be applied to advance the public interest, generate public benefits, and promote the public good.
