Operating Systems

This is the course outline for Housatonic Community College’s Operating Systems. The course focuses on the Linux / Ubuntu / UNIX operational environment. This will include the installation, maintenance and customization of a basic operational client & server configurations. The class will gain hands on experience, via labs, in interfacing to LAN configurations, use of Shell commands and scripting, NFS, Print Services, Remote Access, Security Issues and Backup scenarios will be investigated. Time permitting Apache services, MySQL and PHP integration will be demonstrated. At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to build a fully functional LINUX environment from any vendor supplied DVD or ISO file structure. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: install/Modify a LINUX system from a vendor supplied source on an Intel based platform; understand the maintenance philosophy for a UBUNTU system; install VMWare Workstation to support other operating systems under Linux, Windows or Mac; install updates and selected function packages from the UBUNTU library sources; learn and practice shell commands via aliases and scripts; build security and aces restrictions through firewalls and ACL capabilities; set up print functionality via CUPS, SAMBA and LPR; test FTP functionality within the LAB, and to remote sites; use DNS and DHCP services to interface with system resources; build a remote capability to communicate with remote hosts and share files / information – NFS; develop local and remote backup / restore scenarios; and have the confidence to read, understand and act upon vendor supplied information via the web and printed material.
