Network Administration I

This is the course outline for Housatonic Community College’s Network Administration I. The course focuses on the proper hardware and software configurations required to securely interconnect local & remote LAN segments. This will include the installation, configuration and customization of a basic LAN hardware to comply with network design specifications. The class will gain hands on experience, via labs, in interfacing LAN configurations, via Routers, Switches and Firewalls. These setups will be practiced through emulation software, which supports, major vendor configuration languages. Finally, numerous problem determination scenarios will be studied. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: installation of diagnostic and performance monitors for networks; learn the basics of interconnecting LAN segments – bridges, routers, switches; investigate the TCP/IP protocol stack and its relation to the ISO stack; discuss & configure routers; discuss & configure switches; understand the different Router Protocols; connect to the remote Cloud / Internet; network troubleshooting & use of software tools; basic network security – firewalls, anti-virus and VPN; and use of case studies in the development of hardware & software configurations.
