Introduction to Computer Security

This is the course outline for Housatonic Community College’s Introduction to Computer Security. The course focuses on the study of the fundamentals of computer security. Topics will include physical, operating system, application, user, networking hardware and cryptography principles. The Windows, Linux and Cisco environments will be utilized as the test beds for student exercises. Students will have access to UCertify videos, labs and test scenarios. Upon completion of the course the students should, with additional practice via uCertify, be prepared for the national certification exams. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: understand the basic concepts of computer security; use of course videos, labs and uCertify capabilities; have an understanding and use of hardware, system software, applications and physical based security; develop and understand of the various threats which may be encountered by a security analyst; design a secure network using firewalls, port and protocol protection; access control mechanisms such as ACL’s, rights, permissions and policies; develop risk assessments; evaluate the various monitoring techniques; understand cryptography concepts and mechanisms, single point of failure analysis, backups and redundancy; stay current with the evolving technologies; and have the confidence to read, understand and act upon vendor supplied information via the web and printed material.
