This is the course outline for Housatonic Community College’s Database Design I. The course focuses on the core concepts of relational database design using Structured Query Language (SQL). Topics include the creation, organization, normalization, and maintenance of relational databases and the in-depth use of SQL for querying and data manipulation. The course requires substantial hands-on work with a modern relational database management system, such as Microsoft ACCESS, or MySQL (Preferred), in a computerized classroom environment. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: understand the relationship between databases & tables; learn the SQL language syntax, through demonstration and practice, and its ability to create complex reports; understand the relationships that may be established between tables; understand relational database design using the concepts of proper normalization; build SQL scripts to create, modify and delete databases / tables; learn SQL techniques to add, update and delete table entries; create user functions and procedures to access database tables, design, code and test complex SQL queries; and build a level of comfort to pursue independent study / reading of SQL material and user code.
